Winter Industrial Services: Keeping Your Operation Running All Season
Winter in Western Canada is not a slow season; it’s when your operation is under the most strain.
Temperatures drop, daylight shrinks, fluids thicken, and every weak link in your facility – a valve, a frozen sump, a fouled exchanger, a neglected tank – shows up at the worst possible time. The choice is simple: either react all winter to freeze-ups and unplanned outages, or get ahead of it with a service partner that is built to operate in sub-zero conditions.
Solution Services operates year-round, with service lines and equipment specifically suited for winter work across conventional production, midstream facilities, and industrial sites. From hot oilers on the conventional side, to vac trucks, hydrovacs, tank cleaning, specialized fluids, mechanical and valve services – we keep your assets moving when the weather isn’t cooperating.
This article outlines what changes for operators in the winter months and how our service lines can support you through the entire season.

What Winter Really Does to Your Facility
Once the temperature drops, your facility doesn’t behave the same way it did in September.
Fluids that flowed easily a few months ago become sluggish. Paraffin, wax and solids settle faster and harder. Tanks lose effective working volume as bottoms consolidate. Sumps and pits fill with a mixture of ice, sludge and product that doesn’t move without help. Lines that tolerated marginal insulation in the summer start plugging or freezing outright.
On top of that, the operating window tightens. Short days and weather delays compress the time available to safely complete any work that takes assets offline. Access gets more complicated as roads drift in, ground freezes, and yard space fills with snow and ice.
That’s the backdrop we design our winter service offering around: not theory, but how your assets and crews actually behave at –20°C and below.
Keeping Conventional Production Moving: Hot Oilers & Fluid Heating
On the conventional side, winter exposes every flow assurance issue. Lines that carried marginal fluids suddenly plug. Tanks that were already dirty turn into solid, immovable inventory.
Our Hot Oilers & Fluid Heating units are set up to keep that production moving.
Through winter, these units are used to circulate heated oil or treated fluids through tubing, casings and short flowlines to remove wax and paraffin build-up before it kills production. We heat stock tanks, treaters and FWKOs so BS&W continues to move, and you aren’t left fighting blocks of semi-solid product. When wells, batteries or satellites are shut in after a cold snap or planned outage, hot oilers are used to pre-heat the system, so start-up is controlled rather than chaotic.
This is where Specialized Fluids Services comes into play. In many cases, heat alone isn’t enough. Combining temperature with the right chemistry allows us to dissolve or loosen deposits, clean up problem lines and vessels, and extend the time between interventions. The result isn’t just an emergency “thaw” – it’s a planned, engineered clean-up that stabilizes production for the rest of the season.

Managing Winter Waste: Vac Trucks and Combo Units
Winter waste is different. You’re not only dealing with sludge, product and solids; you’re fighting snow, ice and frozen debris in every sump, pit and low point on site.
Our Vac Truck Services and combo units are built for this environment. They’re used through winter to pull out heavily mixed waste from production sumps, skim pits and skimmer tanks before they overflow or compromise containment. When tank bottoms and slop tanks reach the point where heavy product and water are freezing together, we remove that material so you can recover working volume and reduce the risk of integrity issues.
Around facilities, roads and yards, drains, culverts and catch basins can freeze or plug as soon as freeze–thaw cycles start. With high-pressure, heated water and strong vacuum, our combo units thaw and clear those systems, restoring flow and reducing the risk of flooding or washouts during chinooks and shoulder-season melts.
In winter incident response, vac units are often the front line. When snow and ice are contaminated with hydrocarbons, everything has to be removed quickly and cleanly. Our crews are used to working in those conditions, coordinating closely with client environmental teams to move contaminated material offsite and restore control.
Vac and combo work rarely happens in isolation. It typically runs alongside tank cleaning, industrial cleaning, or vessel and exchanger work, so that cleaning and waste disposal are handled as one integrated scope.
Working in Frozen Ground: Hydrovac Services
Frozen ground doesn’t stop the need to expose pipelines, power, fiber or facility undergrounds. It just raises the risk if you try to do it with mechanical excavation.
Our Hydrovac Services remain fully active through winter. Heated, pressurized water is used to cut through frost while the vacuum system removes soil, ice and water in a controlled manner. This allows safe daylighting of live lines and congested corridors where a backhoe or excavator would be high-risk.
In practical terms, that means we can support tie-ins, integrity digs, leak investigations and emergency repairs even in deep frost. When a line is suspected of leaking or frozen, we expose it without adding equipment damage to the problem. For facility and civil work, hydrovacs are used to cut trenches, open up culverts, or create pile holes at sites where mechanical digging is restricted or not allowed in winter.
The value is simple: you maintain the ability to do underground work in winter without gambling on hitting something you shouldn’t.
Freeze Protection and Specialized Fluids
Every operation has a set of recurring pain points in winter: the same low points and marginal lines that freeze first every year. Ignoring them is expensive. Fixing them doesn’t always require major capital; often it’s about targeted intervention with the right tools.
Our Specialized Fluids Services, together with Hot Oilers & Fluid Heating, are used to protect and recover these weak spots. We circulate or inject the appropriate fluids where freeze risk is highest, support line clearing and thaw work when issues do occur, and provide temporary or supplemental heating on critical circuits during severe cold snaps.
In parallel, we move and manage sour or contaminated fluids through the season, integrating scrubbers and carbon filter units where venting or emissions limits are tight. That means winter work can proceed on problematic systems without waiting for perfect conditions.
This part of the offering is about risk reduction. The goal is not zero freeze events – in our climate, that’s unrealistic – but fewer failures, less time offline when they do happen, and a controlled response instead of a scramble.

Winter Tank, Vessel and Exchanger Campaigns
Operators at times have tank, vessel and exchanger work for winter. Production may be lower, but the risk of carrying fouled or constrained equipment into the coldest part of the year is high.
Our Large Diameter Tank Cleaning (LDTC) services run year-round, and the methodology is adaptable for winter conditions. We plan campaigns to restore capacity in stock tanks, produced water tanks and larger storage tanks before sludge, wax and solids fully lock in. Hot oilers, specialized fluids, vac trucks and, where appropriate, robotics are combined so product and sludge can still be mobilized and removed when temperatures are low.
On the process side, Vessel Cleaning, Industrial Cleaning, and Bundle & Exchanger Cleaning are used to reset equipment that tends to foul more heavily as fluids cool down. High-pressure water, mechanical methods and Chemical Cleaning are applied in a controlled way to bring differential pressures back into line and restore heat transfer before winter loads peak.
For sour or higher-risk assets, Scrubbers & Carbon Filter Units are deployed to manage vapours and odours. That allows confined space and intrusive work to proceed in winter while staying inside emissions and exposure limits.
The net result is straightforward: tanks, vessels and exchangers are not allowed to become hidden bottlenecks just when you need them most.
Mechanical and Valve Reliability in the Cold
Equipment that limps along in mild weather often fails outright in the cold. Valves that don’t fully seal, drains that weep, and small-bore fittings that are “good enough for now” become genuine failures once metal contracts and water turns to ice.
Our Mechanical Services and Valve Services & Repair teams focus on hardening that side of the operation before and during winter. We inspect and repair key isolation, control and emergency shutdown valves so they function under winter loads instead of seizing when you need them. We address small-bore drains, bleeds and vents that are known trouble spots, reducing the likelihood of freeze-related cracks or leaks.
When assets are down for tank cleaning, vessel cleaning or exchanger work, we integrate mechanical scopes into the same window: tube testing / plugging, seal and gasket replacements, small piping repairs, insulation and heat trace fixes. That way, every outage delivers more value than just the cleaning itself.
In practice, this is about taking the “known issues” list that every facility has and working it down methodically so you’re not relying on luck when the temperature drops.
Planning the Season Ahead
The operations that get through winter with the least disruption tend to have one thing in common: they didn’t wait for the first deep freeze to take action.
Over the coming months, we work with clients to identify the tanks, lines, valves, sumps and exchangers that shouldn’t be carried into deep winter in their current state, and to align the right combination of hot oilers, vac trucks, hydrovacs, specialized fluids, tank cleaning, mechanical and valve services against that list. The objective is simple – to turn winter from a season of constant firefighting into a planned, manageable operating period.
If you want to reduce unplanned outages, avoid preventable freeze-ups, and keep your assets running steadily through the cold, now is the time to define your winter worklist and secure capacity.
